Accomodation & Transport

After arriving at Milan Airport, we took the train to the city center. The train goes directly to the central station, costs 13 euros per person and does not have to be booked in advance. Since our Hotel was a little further away, we bought a 3-day-pass for the Metro, which also was 13 euros and helped us a lot throughout the days. This ticket can be purchased at every train station at the ticket machines.
Our hotel was the Hotel Degli Arcimboldi, situated at the edge of the city. It is right next to the M5 station Bignami , isn’t too expensive and still has high standards. The room was really nice, the staff always friendly and the connection to the city was good. We felt very comfortable in the hotel, but the area was probably not the best one – that was the only disadvantage. Nevertheless, we would book it again.
Otherwise, we explored Milan a lot on foot and simply walked through the beautiful streets without any destination – That’s exactly what Milan is perfect for.

Duomo di Milano

The Cathedral is a must-see when in Milan. If you are there during the holiday season, we recommend you to buy tickets in advance via the Website or Get Your Guide.
We bought our Tickets at the ticket machines next to the cathedral and decided just to visit the roof terrace, because the inside area was too crowded. We also went by stairs which was totally fine and only cost 14 euros per person. The roof terrace offers a great view over Milan and the architecture is impressive. However, it is not always as quiet as it looks in the pictures. Be prepared for queues and strict security guards.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele

Right next to the Milan Cathedral you will find the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. With its luxury shops and restaurants there is plenty to see and do. You don’t have to pay an entrance fee and can simply stroll through the corridors and look at the impressive architecture.

Museo del Novecento

The Museo del Novecento is our little insider tip for you. It offers a beautiful view and photo spot right infront of the Cathedral. You can either buy the tickets online or, as we did, buy the tickets directly at the reception. The price offers two different categories, regular is 9,50 euros & Student is 4,50 euros per person. Luckily we caught an empty day, so we didn’t have to wait in line for too long. However, the spot is becoming increasingly popular through social media, so you should be prepared for that.

San Siro

With Michel being a football fan, the San Siro Stadium could not be missed. San Siro is the home stadium of Inter & AC Milan and the largest stadium in Italy. We bought our Tickets some weeks in advance on the website and paid 30 euros per person. The stadium is super easy to reach with the M5 via the subway station San Siro Stadio. However, on the way back we would recommend you to leave the game a few minutes earlier, as the subway quickly becomes extremely crowded.
In conclusion we can both say: It was an impressive experience and we would definitely do it again!

Pizzeria Spontini

The best pizza in Milan can be found right next to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele at Pizzeria Spontini.
You pay an average of 6 euros for a piece and we can tell you, it tastes like heaven. We had the Pizza Salame, it’s a little spicy but super tasty!

Bosco Verticale

If you want to visit a more modern district in Milan, you have to visit Isola. You can reach it via the train station M2 Gioia or M5 Isola. This part of Milan offers for example the twin towers Bosco Verticale, two houses that are overgrown with plants. We were very lucky that there was a cute little market near the train station, which invited us to stroll a bit. In general the district is very green and offers nice opportunities for a walk and to enjoy the sun.

Day Trip to Lake Como

One of our highlights in Italy was our day trip to Lake Como. From the central station it takes around one hour to Como and costs only 10 euros per person. Once you arrive in Como, you walk to the harbor and take the ferry from there which is 20 euro per person. We did not book anything online and that worked out very well.
We decided to visit Bellagio, but there are so many beautiful places to see. But we can assure you that the boat trip and Bellagio were the perfect decision.
It doesn’t require much planning in advance: just walking around is beautiful enough.
Here are a few impressions:

Would we recommend Milan?

In conclusion we can totally recommend Milan for a short trip. We would say that three days are definitely enough to discover the city. You can easily reach everything by metro, so the hotel doesn’t have to be in the city center. The connection to the airport is also very good. The only thing that annoyed us in Milan were people who constantly wanted to sell something. Saying no was often not enough and you really have to be careful that they don’t trick you.
Overall, Milan is beautiful but if you have to choose, other cities like Rome may have a bit more to offer.
